Mosaic – Newcomer Family Resource Network is a not for profit agency assisting in the settlement of newcomers to Winnipeg by providing community-based English as an Additional Language classes and family programs that include childcare for pre-school aged children

Job Overview

The Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters, HIPPY Home Visitor is warm and friendly and can connect well with parents from a variety of backgrounds. The Home Visitor enjoys working with families with young children and is able to work well both independently, and as part of a team. This job requires someone who is flexible, compassionate, energetic, and has a desire to learn and grow in their skills and knowledge.

Home Visitors speak the first language of one of the cluster groups of newcomers served by Mosaic HIPPY, as well as English.(A cluster group is an area of the city with a cluster of newcomer families who speak the Home Visitor’s first language)

Responsibilities

  • Recruiting 10‐15 families within their designated cluster area
  • Maintaining a wait list of families from their cluster area
  • Weekly home visits (make‐up visits when necessary) to all participating families for the purpose of modelling relationship building activities that parents can do with their child
  • Participating in weekly training sessions and other staff development activities
  • Planning and facilitating monthly group meetings with the families in their cluster area including planning, recruiting and finding a suitable location with the support of the HIPPY coordinator
  • Meeting regularly with the HIPPY Coordinator to discuss child/family progress and family issues and concerns as they arise
  • Timely completion and submission of required reports and other documentation as required by the Coordinator and/or Mother’s Matter (the national HIPPY organization)
  • Participating in all HIPPY sponsored activities (i.e. field trips, celebrations, )
  • Participating in Mosaic team meetings
  • Promotion all of Mosaic programs and services
  • The HIPPY home visitor position is a 3 year term in which Home Visitors have the opportunity to participate in personal growth and professional development activities along with the responsibilities of the Home Visitor position
  • Before the completion of the 3 year term the Home Visitor will help the coordinator find their replacement from within their home visit group
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • We need community ambassadors who speak Arabic and/or Tigrinya in addition to English
  • A current participant in the HIPPY program or a participant in Mosaic family programs and/or ESL classes, preferred
  • A parent of a three four or five year old, or have access to a pre‐school child with whom to practice the activities
  • A resident of the targeted community(downtown)
  • Access to public transportation or ownership of a vehicle (if needed)
  • Good English communication skills including reading and writing
  • Some experience using a computer for email. Training on data entry and using spreadsheets will be provided
  • Good organizational skills and ability to be task‐oriented
  • Ability to adhere to schedules and specific timetables
  • Demonstrated potential leadership abilities
  • Demonstrated emotional maturity and sensitivity to the needs and interests of the targeted community
  • Ability to work in a multicultural environment
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a non‐profit and volunteer based organization
  • Ability to work flexible hours
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada

 

Job Details: The candidate must be available to schedule Home Visit appointments from Monday to Friday between the hours of 9:15 – 4:45. In addition to home visits, the position requires attendance at a weekly meeting downtown, and a monthly group meeting at a community location. There may be occasions when the Home Visitor will be asked to attend a promotional event on an evening or weekend.

  • Job Type: TERM, September 2019 to June, 2022
  • Location: Downtown – Knox Church, 400 Edmonton St. and surrounding community
  • Schedule:
      •      25 hours per week during training period (approximately 1 month)
      •      Up to a maximum of 25 hours per week after the training period dependent on funding and caseload
      •      This position follows the public school schedule and has the following unpaid breaks: winter holidays (2 weeks), spring break (1 week) and summer break (approximately 2 months).
      •      Program Schedule is provided each
  • Salary: $16.36 per hour plus employee benefits
