About Mosaic English Classes
Classes at Mosaic help parents and their children adjust to life in Canada. Students learn English to do everyday tasks like talking to teachers, buying groceries, and asking for help. Classes are for newcomer parents or primary caregivers. Participants are encouraged to make friends and form a social network.
Classes are for beginner to intermediate English speakers, usually Benchmark 1-6. Find out more about Benchmark levels.
Mosaic offers the federal government Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada LINC program (LINC) Program.
Understanding the Canadian Language Benchmarks explains the national standards framework and its value for language professionals and learners. This video is primarily aimed at language trainers, administrators, service provider organizations and other partners with an interest in learning more about how to describe and measure the language ability in English as a second language of adult newcomers.
Who can Join?
Newcomers with Permanent Resident status are eligible:
- Must have Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) Levels 1 – 6 assessment
- First priority is given to those participants who need childcare for pre-school aged children aged 6 months – 5 years, or who have family commitments that prevent them from attending a full time program
How to Join
To join a class, you must go to WELARC for assessment and referral.
After your assessment, WELARC will send a copy of your referral form to Mosaic.
Next, Mosaic will contact you to confirm your registration for a class, or—if the class is full—put you on the waiting list.
Care for Newcomer Children
Mosaic provides on-site childcare for children 6 months to 5 years of age. This service is free for newcomers taking English classes.
Children in the program will:
- Learn songs and rhymes in English and other languages
- Play and have fun
- Learn routines
Children are encouraged to speak English and make friends. They will learn the structure and expectations of a preschool classroom setting to help them adjust when they reach school age.
All Mosaic childcare staff are qualified to work with children, have up-to-date first-aid training, and have had criminal record and child abuse registry checks to ensure they are legally allowed to work with children.
You can read more details in our Childcare Workers’ Manual for Newcomer Children and their Families (pdf file).

Mosaic has classes and programs at 397 Carlton Street in downtown Winnipeg.
We also run classes and programs at various locations around the city.
Due to covid 19 Health regulations some of our classes will be taught in a blended format: Classes will be divided in two groups of 8-9 students. Each group attends classes for two days a week and works independently at home for two days using different online tools.
A few classes will be entirely online.
